Park(ing) Day is an annual world wide even that takes place on the third Friday in September. Artists, designers, and citizens are encouraged to take over a parking space (or a few) for a couple of hours and turn it into something else. The idea is to get a dialogue going, on the streets, about what public space is and how it could be used. Too often we walk through our manufactured habitats without thinking. We don’t consider why things are the way they are - and how they could be improved. Park(ing) day is an attempt to break that paradigm and encourage creativity and vision for public space.
At VIU, a group of students in the Master of Community Planning program took over several parking spaces in downtown Nanaimo for two hours on Friday morning and set them up according to various themes and ideas. It’s not that parking is so bad - more that we can do better with our space if we take the time to explore options without limits. Here are a few photos from the event.
Thanks to all who came out and chatted with us!
