Hi! My name is Peter Thicke.
I am currently enrolled in the Master of Community Planning program at Vancouver Island University and use this blog to explore ideas related to urban design and planning. I am interested in the way cities can provide a high quality of life for human inhabitants while being well integrated with the surrounding region. Design and systems thinking and philosophy play a central role in my interpretation of what defines a ‘good’ use of land, and I like to explore their myriad physical manifestations.
Though my home is a small town on the west coast of Vancouver Island, I have been fortunate to live in a variety of environments both in Canada and internationally. After completing a B.Sc. in Biology at the University of Victoria, I worked with organizations like Pacific Wild and Nimmo Bay Resort studying marine mammals. I became interested in planning after I realized the impact the field has on the environment that I love and know so well.
My hope is that through applying scientific evidence and design principles we can find novel solutions to the larger problems affecting our society and the land we inhabit.
